![]() Learn how to recognize depression in teens and how to help by attending the Teen Depression Workshop from Families for Depression Awareness. Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) teaches ordinary citizens how to recognize a mental health emergency and how to get a person at risk the help they need. Participants will learn how to: Recognize the warning signs of suicide, offer hope, and get help & refer. The more people who know how to act, the more lives may be saved. Newton Cares: Coalition for Suicide Prevention and Mental Health is working diligently to train as many people as possible in the suicide prevention technique called QPR – Question, Persuade, Refer. Our community has been affected by suicide. Her children attend Newton public schools. She holds a Master of Arts in Teaching from Tufts University. Jane tutored writing at the Mount Ida College Writing Center. Professional writing tutor, Jane Hirschhorn will be demonstrating how to help in a way that is productive, respectful, and allows students ownership of their work. Learn how to avoid some common pitfalls when helping your kids with writing assignments. This session will be led by Kate Hurd, a former two-year softball captain at Colby College and member of the NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete team, and coach at Newton North High School and Kim Penney, a two-time Boston Globe and Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Coach of the Year, served as varsity girls’ basketball coach at Reading Memorial High School for fifteen years. Learn about when to start looking at colleges, how to contact coaches and what to ask them, the recruitment process, and more. Take control of the college athletic recruitment process. Join us in this cooperative dialogue to be led by Newton teens. Community connection, shared information, and discussion are the keys to promoting good mental health.
